China FAW Group Corporation (FAW Group) is the largest automotive group in China, as well as the largest commercial vehicle manufacturer in the world since 2019. It is one of two automotive groups based in Jilin province and one of the Big Three auto groups in China (the others being the Shanghai Automotive Industry Corporation and Dongfeng Motor Group). FAW Group is primarily involved in the research and development, production and sales of passenger cars, light and heavy-duty trucks, and buses. Its major product lines include the Hongqi, Besturn, Betsy and Jiefang vehicle brands.
FAW Group was founded in 1953 in Changchun, Jilin province. It is the first Chinese automotive group that was created by the Chinese government and is owned by the central government and several local government entities. It is also the first Chinese automotive group that has achieved world-class standards. In 2018, FAW Group was recognized as the largest exporter of commercial vehicles and the largest car manufacturer in China. In 2019, FAW Group became the largest commercial vehicle manufacturer in the world, overtaking German automaker MAN and Japanese company Isuzu Motors Ltd.
As of 2019, FAW Group has several wholly-owned and joint venture subsidiaries, such as FAW Car Co., Ltd., FAW Jiefang Automobile Co., Ltd., FAW Bus Co., Ltd., and FAW International (HK) Co., Ltd., amongst others. It also has joint ventures with several foreign automakers, including Volkswagen AG, Toyota Motor Corporation, and Hyundai Motor Company.
FAW Group has gained international accolades for its work in technological and environmental innovation. It has developed several advanced technologies, such as driverless vehicle technologies, Environmental Friendly Engine Technology, Lightweight Advanced Technology, Connected Vehicle Solutions, and Body Structural Reinforcement Technology. It has established several technological research centers and global R&D centers, and it is also the first Chinese automotive group to win the “German Car Innovation Award” in 2017.
In 2019, FAW Group became the only automotive group to receive the “United Nation Global Compact Award”. This honor was given in recognition of its efforts in building a green economy, promoting social responsibility, and improving the level of corporate governance.
