Summer Car Care Checklist
As the hot weather brings with it a whole new set of vehicle maintenance needs, it’s important to make sure that you stay on top of your car care. Keeping up with regular maintenance will help your car run more efficiently and reduce your chances of unexpected breakdowns. To help ensure that your car runs properly this summer, here’s a summer car care checklist.
1. Check Tire Pressure and Tread
One of the most important components of summer car care is ensuring proper tire pressure. Make sure you check your tire’s PSI (pounds per square inch) when the tires are cold. That is, the tires should not have been driven on for several hours. It’s also important to check your tires’ tread. If the tread is worn down, you should consider replacing the tires.
2. Check Belts and Hoses
Your vehicle’s belts and hoses are essential to its operation, so it’s important to check them regularly. Belts that are cracked, frayed, or harder than normal should be replaced. If possible, look for any signs of swelling or blistering on the hoses, indicating that they have been weakened or have been leaking. If you notice any signs of damage, you should have them repaired or replaced as soon as possible.
3. Change Oil and Oil Filter
To keep your engine running smoothly, you should check your oil levels every month and change your oil and oil filter as necessary. This is especially important to do before taking a summer road trip, as excessively hot weather can cause your oil to break down quicker. Additionally, it’s important to use the right type of oil. Most cars will run on conventional oil, but some may require synthetic oil. 4. Check Radiator Coolant Levels
Hot weather means extra stress on your vehicle, especially when it comes to your radiator. To make sure your radiator has enough coolant and is working properly, check your coolant levels and top off with the proper solution (usually a 50/50 mixture of water and antifreeze).
5. Inspect Battery and Wiring
Hot weather can be damaging to your battery and its wiring, as the heat can cause corrosion and damage to the connections. Make sure to check your battery regularly and clean the terminals if necessary. Additionally, make sure to check your wiring for any signs of wear or damage. If you see signs of corrosion or wear, have your vehicle serviced as soon as possible.
6. Replace Windshield Wipers
Summer brings with it rain and other forms of inclement weather, making it essential to have working windshield wipers. Replace your wipers if they’re streaky, cracked, or torn.
7. Choose the Right Gasoline
When selecting your fuel, make sure you’re using gasoline with an octane level that’s recommended for your vehicle. Using the wrong octane level can cause a difference in performance and potentially damage your engine. As such, be sure to check your owner’s manual for more information.
8. Monitor Brake System
Regularly inspect your brakes for any signs of wear or damage. Squealing, grinding, or vibrations when braking are all signs that service is needed. Make sure to have any necessary repairs done promptly.
9. Check Air Conditioning
The summer heat can make your car rides unbearable unless your air conditioning is working properly. To make sure it’s working properly, have your air conditioning system checked and serviced if necessary.
10. Keep Windows Clean
To maintain visibility and prevent the windows from fogging up, make sure to regularly clean the windows inside and outside of your car.
