Uranium ore deposits are economically recoverable concentrations of uranium within the Earths crust. Uranium is one of the more common elements in the Earths crust, being 40 times more common than silver and 500 times more common than gold. It can be found almost everywhere in rock, soil, rivers, and oceans.

However, uranium ore deposits are relatively rare and account for less than 0.2% of the Earths crust by weight. They tend to form in areas of volcanic or hydrothermal activity, such as near hot springs and dormant volcanoes. Uranium deposits are also found in sedimentary rocks, in areas of the planet where oxygen concentrations and other environmental conditions were favorable for the formation of soluble uranium-bearing minerals.

The types of uranium ore deposits depend on the geological and geochemical conditions under which they formed. Most uranium ore deposits fall into one of four categories: roll-front, sandstone-hosted, carnotite-vanadium, and unconformity-related.

Roll-front deposits are the most common type of uranium ore deposit, accounting for nearly 80 percent of known uranium resources. They form when uranium-bearing solutions percolate through porous, hydrothermally altered sediments, such as sandstone or limestone. These solutions form deposits of uranium-bearing minerals between upper and lower layers of permeable rock, producing a distinct roll-front feature. Roll-front deposits can be economically mined using open-pit or underground techniques.

Sandstone-hosted uranium deposits make up around 10 to 15 percent of global uranium resources. They form when uranium-bearing fluids flow upwards from deep sedimentary rocks and are absorbed into the sandstone layers of aquifers. Sandstone-hosted deposits can be extracted using conventional underground mining techniques.

Carnotite deposits represent around 5 percent of known global uranium resources. These deposits are usually found associated with oil shale and are usually mined using open-pit techniques. This type of deposit is often difficult to explore and mine because of the presence of high amounts of uranium, which can make the area hazardous.

Unconformity-related deposits make up the remainder of known uranium resources. They form when uranium-bearing fluids are absorbed into cracks and fractures in the underlying bedrock. These deposits are usually mined using underground techniques.

Uranium ore deposits are a valuable source of energy and are mined for use in nuclear power plants and the manufacture of nuclear weapons. As the demand for uranium continues to grow, exploration for uranium ore deposits is becoming more common. In recent years, a growing number of companies have begun looking for new uranium ore deposits in areas that had not been previously explored, such as Africa and Central Asia.
