Beirut
Beirut is the capital and largest city of Lebanon. It is located on a peninsula at the midpoint of Lebanons Mediterranean coast. Beirut is both the countrys major seaport and its center of finance and commerce. The Greater Beirut metropolitan area, which includes parts of southeastern Syria, is home to an estimated population of 2.1 million.
Beirut is one of the oldest cities in the world and has endured many different cultures and civilizations. Its history dates back to the very first settlements of ancient Phoenicians more than 5,000 years ago. It has served as a major port and trading center for merchants coming from all over the world. Through the centuries, Beirut has been invaded and occupied by the Greeks, Romans, Arabs, Mamelukes, Turks, and French. These different rulers left their mark on the city in terms of architecture and culture.
Today, Beirut is an incredibly diverse city, with a variety of religious and ethnic groups living side by side. The population is roughly half Muslim and half Christian, with other smaller communities of other faiths as well. Architecture in Beirut ranges from Ottoman-style buildings to Roman ruins, and a number of modern skyscrapers.
Beirut experienced a civil war in the 1970s and 1980s, resulting in extensive damage to virtually every part of the city. Many of the city’s historic landmarks had to be rebuilt, and the city remains in a state of rebuilding and renovation to this day.
Despite the civil war and its aftermath, Beirut remains an important hub of business and culture in the Middle East. Its economy is strongly based in banking, finance, and technology, with a major focus on the digital and creative industries. Beirut is also a major cultural center, and is home to many popular music, art, and dance venues.
