SYNOPSIS
This GB 6654–1996 specifies the dimensions, shapes, masses, and permissible deviations of steel plates used for pressure vessels. The plates that are covered by this document are those with a nominal thickness of 4.75 mm or more, and a nominal width of 600 mm or more. The characteristics of the plates, i.e., the out-of-straightness, warping and twisting, are also specified in this document.

3 TECHNICAL TERMS
3.1 Convexity: The form of convexity of the steel plates at their edge shall be consistent with the provisions of GB/T 709–2006.
3.2 Out-of-straightness: The deviation of the edge of steel plates from the straight line shall be consistent with the provisions of GB/T 709–2006.
3.3 Warping: Warping is the displacement of a steel plate caused by out-of-straightness between its end and its edge. The maximum warping shall be consistent with the provisions of GB/T 709–2006.
3.4 Twisting: Twisting is the displacement of steel plates caused by out-of-straightness between two parallel lines. The maximum twisting shall be consistent with the provisions of GB/T 709–2006.
4 DIMENSIONS, SHAPES, MASSES, AND PERMISSIBLE DEVIATIONS
4.1 Dimensions and shapes
Steel plates used for pressure vessels shall be provided in the form of plates, sheets, strips, bars, and forgings. The dimensions and shapes of these steel plates representing a unit weight of 1ton shall be consistent with the provisions of GB/T 709–2006.
4.2 Masses
The masses of the steel plates provided in accordance with the requirements of this document shall be in compliance with the provisions of GB/T 709–2006.
4.3 Permissible deviations
The permissible deviations for the steel plates for pressure vessels shall be in accordance with the provisions of GB/T 222–1984, GB/T 223–1987, GB/T 228–1987, GB/T 4336–1984, GB/T 710–2006, GB/T 8162–2008, and GB/T 709–2006.
5 MARKING AND INSPECTION
The steel plates used for pressure vessels shall affixed with the following information in accordance with the provisions of GB/T 709–2006:
(1) Symbol indicating the pressure vessel steel plate;
(2) Name and address of the manufacturer;
(3) Plate number;
(4) Chemical composition;
(5) Heat treatment condition;
(6) Masses per plate;
(7) Dimension;
(8) Date of delivery;
and any other information specified in the contract or the order.
The contact surface of the steel plates for pressure vessels should be clean, dry and free from rust, dust, and burrs. Upon arrival of the steel plates, the manufacturer shall inspect the relevant performance of the same in accordance with the provisions in GB/T 709–2006.
6 TRANSPORTATION, STORAGE, HANDLING, MARKING AND PACKAGING
The steel plates for pressure vessels shall be transported according to the requirements of GB/T 709–2006. The steel plates that have been collected, stored, handled and delivered should be free of dust, rust, and burrs. The manufacturer shall affix a label on each steel plate that indicates the relevant information specified in GB/T 709–2006. The packaging, loading equipment and transportation media shall be in compliance with the requirements of GB/T 709–2006.
7 PRESERVATION
The manufacturer shall protect the surface of the steel plates for pressure vessels from corrosion, rust, or other damage. The relevant preservation measures in accordance with the requirements of GB/T 709–2006 shall be taken. The manufacturer shall also provide an inspection record on the preservation progress of the steel plates for pressure vessels.
Conclusion
This GB 6654–1996 provides the standards for the dimensions, shapes, masses, and permissible deviations of steel plates used for pressure vessels. The plates must have a nominal thickness of 4.75 mm or more, and a nominal width of 600 mm or more. In addition, the characteristics of the plates such as the out-of-straightness, warping and twisting are also specified. The manufacturer must affix a label on each steel plate that indicates the relevant information specified in GB/T 709–2006. The packaging, loading equipment and transportation media shall be in compliance with the requirements of GB/T 709–2006. Furthermore, the manufacturer shall protect the surface of the steel plates for pressure vessels from corrosion, rust, or other damage.
