My first visit to London
I had the opportunity to visit London for the first time in April of 2012. I had never seen a city as large, bustling and beautiful as the heart of Great Britain. From the moment I arrived at Heathrow Airport, I was greeted by a pleasant and cheerful waitress eager to give me a taste of the local culture.
The entire city was a bustling hub of activity, full of shoppers, tourists, performers, commuters, and many other people busy coming and going. Everywhere I went there were plenty of historical monuments and impressive buildings. Every alley and street had something different to offer.
The first place I visited was Buckingham Palace, one of the greatest and most famous sights in London. Its enormity and grandeur were instantly recognizable. The beautiful gardens with perfect lawns and the impressive artifacts located inside and outside of the palace were exceptional. I also had the privilege of watching the yearly changing of the guard ceremony and solemnly watched the parade of foot soldiers in their distinct iconic soldier uniforms.
I was able to visit the Tower of London and was astounded by its beauty. The formidable fortress and its 800-year history was evidence of a very powerful and mighty kingdom. The intricate guard procedures I observed every day in front of the palace was awe-inspiring.
Covent Garden was a wonderful included a delightful Italian street circus, live mime artists, buskers, theatre groups, and street performers. The markets were brimming with beautiful arts, crafts and all sorts of interesting merchandise.
The British Museum, with its vast number of interesting artifacts, was also an awe-inspiring experience. There I was able to explore and learn about the unique history of London. I walked through the galleries and halls while getting an insight into the cultures, traditions and events that shaped England.
The city’s thriving art and music scene was also impressive. No matter where I went, I heard a variety of musical genres that ranged from rock, pop, jazz and classical. Theatre performances ranged from musicals to Shakespearean plays and National Theatre shows. I also visited many art galleries and museums that showcased amazing art pieces and sculptures.
Last but not least, I also had the chance to sample some of the most delicious and amazing cuisine during my visit. From traditional British dishes to multi-cuisine restaurants, London is a melting pot of culinary delights. I enjoyed a variety of dishes such as fish and chips, pies, rich desserts, pastries and fresh British bread.
My first visit to London was an eye-opener and an unforgettable experience. It was an adventure that I will never forget and look forward to having the opportunity to enjoy again one day soon.
