Shell molding casting is a metal casting process used in the production of metal parts shaped by pouring molten metal into a shell made of sand and binding agents. Shell molding casting is a process by which sand is mixed with a thermosetting resin and a catalyst, resulting in a dry, crumbly mix which is formed into an exact model of the desired molten metal part. The sand mixture is then placed in a steel flask and heated to a very high temperature. This causes the thermosetting resin to harden and takes the form of the shape desired. Once this process is complete, the steel flask is removed and a cavity is created inside the shape of the hardened resin. This cavity will act as a negative of the desired part.

The next step of the process involves the pouring of molten metal into the cavity created. This can be done either manually or with the assistance of a pouring machine. Once the molten metal has filled the cavity, the steel flask is removed and the molten metal cooled to allow for solidification. Once the metal is sufficiently cooled, the shell is removed to reveal the finished part.
