Japan JIS Standard High Manganese Steel Grades and Chemical Compositions
High manganese steel is steel with a high content of manganese relative to other metals in the alloy. It has a low carbon content used in a wide variety of industries, primarily in engineering applications. Manganese is added to steel both as a hardener (because it increases the strength of steel) as well as for its anti-corrosive properties. In engineering applications, high manganese steel is subjected to several levels of processing to improve its surface properties, wear resistance, and strength.
In Japan, steel products are categorized and classified according to the Japanese Industrial Standard (JIS) system. High manganese steel grades are indicated with a JIS symbol, acronymed GX. The grades for high manganese steels differ between JIS GX120Mn12 and JIS GX2120Mn13.
High manganese steel grade JIS GX120Mn12 is a steel indicating a combination of low carbon, average-low alloy content, and high manganese content. It has an excellent combination of wear resistance and ductility, low tensile strength, and relatively low thermal expansion. This makes it an ideal steel for applications in wear-resistant material engineering such as grinding balls and crusher plates. It is also used in wear-resistant parts for mechanical components such as gears, bearings, and sprockets.
JIS GX2120Mn13 is another high manganese steel grade with a higher content of manganese relative to JIS GX120Mn12. Its used for wear-resistant applications such as grindstone wheels and slurry pumps. It has excellent wear resistance along with relatively low electrical conductivity, tensile strength, and thermal expansion.
The chemical compositions of the two types of high manganese steel grades is shown in the tables below.
JIS GX120Mn12 Chemical Composition
C: 0.17-0.260%, Mn: 11-13%, Si: 0.30-3.0%, P: 0.40 max%, S: 0.050 max%, Cr: 0.30-1.2%, Ni: 0.60 max%, Mo: 0.20 max%, Al: 0.030 max%, Cu: 0.30 max%, V: 0.03 max%, Ti: 0.03 max%.
JIS GX2120Mn13 Chemical Composition
C: 0.20-0.261%, Mn: 12-17%, Si: 1.00-3.0%, P: 0.40 max%, S: 0.050 max%, Cr: 0.30-1.0%, Ni: 0.60 max%, Mo: 0.20 max%, Al: 0.030 max%, Cu: 0.30 max%, V: 0.03 max%, Ti: 0.03 max%.
High manganese steel grades in the form of JIS GX120Mn12 and JIS GX2120Mn13 are widely used in various different engineering applications due to their excellent combination of wear resistance and strength, low thermal expansion, and low electrical conductivity, respectively. The chemical compositions of these two grades vary in terms of their carbon, manganese, and other alloy elements in order to optimize their properties for certain applications.
