Research Status of Next Generation Open Networked CNC System

Abstract

Computer numerical control (CNC) machines are widely used in the manufacturing industry, and the research and development of advanced systems to improve their performance is essential. Next-generation open network CNC systems are one of the advanced CNC systems. This paper first reviews the development history and characteristics of open networks in the CNC field. Then, the research status of open networked CNC systems in the computer, communications, control and other aspects is introduced in detail. Finally, a concise conclusion and outlook are given.

Keywords: CNC system; open network; research status

Introduction

Computer numerical control (CNC) is an advanced manufacturing technology mainly used in the production of precise parts, components, and tools. The development of CNC technology has greatly improved the accuracy and precision of manufacturing processes. Nowadays, CNC machines are widely used in many manufacturing industries.

However, with the increasing complexity of modern manufacturing industry, the traditional CNC systems cannot meet the requirements of machinery and equipment. Thus, to improve the performance of CNC systems, the research and development of the advanced technology and systems is needed. Next generation open networked CNC systems are one of the advanced CNC systems.

Development of Open Networks in CNC Field

With the development of computer and communication technology, open networks have been widely applied to CNC systems. One of the earliest and most successful open networks in the CNC field is the “IAP-CNC” system developed by Ingersoll-Rand Ltd. in the late 1980s. The IAP-CNC system was based on the Ethernet network as the communication media, and the open network protocol based on the ISO layers was designed for the real-time communication between the distributed nodes in the system. Afterwards, many companies have developed and applied open networks in the CNC field, such as Siemens, Fanuc, and General Electric.

The main characteristics of the open networks developed in the CNC field can be summarized as follows: Firstly, all the components of the system are connected by a physical network, and all the data of the system can be exchanged via the network. Secondly, the network is based on open protocols, which are compatible with each other. Thirdly, all the nodes in the network can independently participate in the system and data exchange. Finally, the network supports real-time data transmission and communication.

Research Status of Open Networked CNC System

Since the rapid development of computer, communication and control technology, open networking technology is widely used in the industries. Computer, communication and control fields have made great progress in the research of CNC systems based on open networks.

Computer technology

In terms of computer, the research field mainly studies the fault-tolerant and optimistically asynchronous computing algorithms for open networked CNC systems. For example, software-defined networking (SDN) is used to construct the real-time communication network of CNC systems. At the same time, distributed computing technology and parallel computing technology are used to optimize the computing performance of CNC systems.

Communication technology

In terms of communication technology, the research field mainly focuses on the design of open network communication protocols in CNC systems. Research on fieldbus networks was conducted and a number of communication protocol standards were developed.

Control technology

In terms of control technology, the research field mainly focuses on the design of the real-time control algorithm for open networked CNC systems. Research was conducted on motion control algorithms and the development of motion control systems. At the same time, the application of model predictive control (MPC) technology in open networked CNC systems is studied.

Conclusion

In summary, the research on open networked CNC systems has been actively carried out in the computer, communication and control fields. The research status can meet the diverse needs of modern manufacturing industry, but the control algorithm of open networked CNC systems still needs to be further improved. In the future, the development of open networked CNC systems will become more and more intelligent and automated according to the development of artificial intelligence technologies such as artificial neural networks.
