Grit and Resilience
The world looks very different in 2020 compared to just a few short months ago. Grit and resilience have become more important than ever. But what is grit, and how can we develop it?
Grit can be defined as the passion and perseverance to achieve long-term goals. It encompasses both passion for a single mission as well as resilience in the face of obstacles and failures. Grit involves sustained effort towards challenging goals, especially when things become difficult or discouraging. It is more than just a measure of hard work and discipline; it is the factor that carries forward in order to stay focused even when the going gets tough.
The good news is that grit can be learned and developed with practice. Here are some tips to help you cultivate your own sense of grit and resilience:
1. Develop a clear vision. Get clear on what you want to achieve and why its meaningful to you. Create a sense of purpose and create action steps to take towards your goals.
2. Nurture a growth mindset. Believe in yourself and focus on the things you can change and control. Perspective is key here; reframe failure as a learning opportunity and use it as motivation to take the next steps.
3. Find a supportive community. Surround yourself with people who believe in your vision and can provide support and inspiration.
4. Set achievable goals. Make sure you are setting goals that are realistic and achievable. Measure your progress and celebrate small wins with rewards.
5. Practice self-compassion. Remind yourself of your inherent worth and that setbacks are a part of the process. Take care of yourself with healthy habits such as exercise, mindfulness and plenty of sleep.
With practice, grit and resilience can become part of your everyday life. It can help you stay focused on your goals, maintain motivation and find success despite setbacks. Even if the path up the mountain is steep and the going gets tough, remember that your resilience is the key that will carry you to the summit.
