JIS G3106—1999 is a hot-rolled steel for welded structure, with nominal thickness of 6mm to 300mm. The standard is applicable to four grades of steel as follows:
SS400, SS490, SS540 and SM400A.
SS400
This is a steel grade used for welded structures, with a tensile strength of 400 N/mm2 and a minimum yield strength of 245 N/mm2s. The applicable thickness for this grade is 6mm to 150mm.
SS490
This steel grade is a steel grade used for welded structure, with a tensile strength of 490 N/mm2 and a minimum yield strength of 325 N/mm2s. The applicable thickness for this grade is 6mm to 300mm.
SS540
This is a steel grade used for welded structure with a tensile strength of 540 N/mm2 and a minimum yield strength of 365 N/mm2s. The applicable thickness for this grade is up to 150mm.
SM400A
This is a steel grade used for welded structure, with a tensile strength of 400 N/mm2 and a minimum yield strength of 245 N/mm2s. The applicable thickness for this grade is 6mm to 25mm.
The mechanical properties and chemical compositions referred to in JIS G3106—1999 are in line with those in JIS Standards. The surface treatment of the materials used in the manufacture of welded structures must be carried out in accordance with the requirements of JIS Standards. In particular, the cracks resulting from the welding must be checked carefully.
Different types of steel may require different types of welding parameters. For example, when welding SS400 grade steel, a lower welding current is required than when welding SS490 grade steel.
In order to ensure the safety and stability of welded structures, specifications for welders and welding parameters must be met. JIS G3106—1999 specifies the requirements for welding parameters, including welding current type, welding current, welding voltage, welding speed, and other technical parameters.
In addition, JIS G3106—1999 also provides guidelines for designers and manufacturers of welded structures regarding the joint design and selection of welding materials. This is to ensure that appropriate welding techniques are being used in the construction and fabrication of welded structures.
To ensure the quality of welded structures, JIS G3106—1999 also provides standards for quality control. These standards specify the allowable tensile and yield strength, allowable tensile and compressive stress, allowable strain and deformation, allowable harmful elongation, and tolerable shear strength.
In summary, JIS G3106—1999 is an important quality control and design guideline for welded structures. It provides standards for the materials and welding parameters used in welding and quality control. This is essential for both design and production in order to maintain safety and stability in welded structures.
