Cast iron is a type of iron that is produced by melting iron in a furnace. Where wrought iron is created when iron ore is heated and hammered into shapes.
Iron has been around for thousands of years and has been used by humans since the Bronze Age. Around 1000 BC, iron replaced bronze as the material of choice for tools, weapons and works of art. Iron is also found in the form of hemoglobin and other proteins, which helps transport oxygen in the blood stream and carries it to cells throughout the body.
What’s more, iron plays a significant role in the development of new planets and stars. During the formation of these stellar bodies, iron and other metals fuse together, creating a central core of molten rock. Without this essential element, it is thought that new planets would not be formed.
