Introduction
60MnSiCr4 is a kind of non-quenched and the tempered high-speed steel with the carbon content is about 0.55%-0.63%. It has excellent comprehensive properties under annealed and normalized condition, therefore, it is widely applied in high speed tools and cutting tools, such as twist drills, milling cutters, reamers, taps and moulding tools.
Performance
60MnSiCr4 is a high-speed steel with high hardness and tempering hardness, which can reach HRC61.7-63.2. It also has good hardenability and toughness and a high red hardness, even under low temperature condition, the working temperature can reach 450℃. The carbon content and the wettability of this steel can reach a certain level, the weldability and post-welding residual stress is relatively low, therefore, it is suitable for flame quenching, carburizing and nitriding processes.
Application
60MnSiCr4 is mainly used in high speed and insert tools production. This steel is mainly used to make high temperature cutting tools, such as broaches, circular saws, blades, drill heads, twist drills, taps and reamers, etc. Besides, 60MnSiCr4 can also be processed into some special tools, such as grinding wheels, hole cutters, diamond cutters, drilling tools and so on. With the excellent properties of high temperature resistance and high strength, it is often used to produce the cutting tools of glass, ceramic and bearing. In the rubber and plastic industry, the tools made by 60MnSiCr4can be applied in the processes of cutting, shearing, punching and forming. In the paper industry, its’tools also can be applied in printing, cutting and pressing of paper.
Advantages
Compared with other high speed steels, the comprehensive performance of 60MnSiCr4 is fairly good, especially its red hardness and carbide precipitation resistance. When it is heated and operated properly, there are no carbide precipitation, its’ hardness and the hardness toughness after surface quenching and tempering process can be maintained stably. The secondary hardening temperature of 60MnSiCr4is much lower than that of other high speed steels, thus, the production is more stable and fast, this is also a great advantage when producing small pieces.

It has high hardenability, tempering hardness and toughness, but its weakness is its’ uniform tempering hardness, that is, its hardness in different parts of a cutting tool is different.
