Tianjin Binhai New Area Campaign
Tianjin Binhai New Area is one of the five national economic and technical development zones in the Peoples Republic of China. It is located to the east of Beijing and is strategically positioned in the transportation hub at the center of the Beijing Tianjin Corridor. It holds an important position with its nonferrous metals, shipping and offshore energy industries, making it an important base for the key industries of the country.
To boost the development in the area and enhance its position in the country, the Chinese Government launched the Tianjin Binhai New Area Campaign in 2009. The campaign is aimed at making Binhai a world-class new area within five years by promoting its strategic location, industrial base, infrastructure, environmental protection and ocean development potential. The overall goal of the campaign was to make Binhai one of the most attractive places for investment in the world.
To meet the goal of the campaign, the Chinese Government took a series of measures to stimulate the development in Tianjin Binhai. Investment in infrastructure projects such as highways, seaports and transportation links continued to rise while Binhais industrial base was strengthened with support from outside investors. The Binhai industrial sector experienced a major boost through the expansion of its nonferrous metals production and the development of new offshore energy projects.
In addition, Binhais environment protection measures were also strengthened through various efforts such as enhanced monitoring of air and water pollution, tighter restrictions on solid waste disposal, and the introduction of new green energy initiatives. The Binhai government has been working together with local business and non-governmental organizations in order to reduce the negative impact of industrial activities on the environment.
Another important part of the campaign was the focus on ocean development. The Binhai government was keen to promote ocean-related businesses such as shipping and fisheries as well as improving marine environmental protection. To this end, Binhai became the first destination in the region to receive permission to start exploratory deep-sea mining. This was a major indication of the governments commitment to developing the areas ocean potential.
The campaign has been declared a huge success. In just five years, the Binhai New Area has achieved remarkable progress and become an attractive destination for foreign investments. Its total GDP increased from RMB117.5 billion in 2009 to nearly RMB390 billion in 2014, while it has firmly established itself as one of the top five economic and technological development zones in the country.
The Tianjin Binhai New Area Campaign has had a major impact on the region, directly or indirectly affecting the lives of millions of people. It has contributed to the economic growth of the area, creating job and educational opportunities, while at the same time promoting green energy and the sustainable use of marine resources. The campaign has also played an important role in consolidating Chinas position as one of the most attractive places for foreign investments.
