Edward Hastings Zahavi: A Man of Many Talents
Edward Hastings Zahavi was born on June 19, 1918 in New York City, and he was always passionate about words, numbers and education. As a child, he quickly vivid his exceptional intelligence and stellar academic ability. Zahavi went on to major in mathematics at Harvard University, where he surprised everyone and graduated in just three years.
After Harvard, Zahavi went on to teach mathematics and science, which he had a knack for, in the public school system. He then moved on to teach at some of the most prestigious private schools in the country, such as Harvard-Radcliffe, Johns Hopkins and Princeton.b
Zahavi had a unique perspective on teaching. He believed that learning should be interactive, that it should involve passion and excitement. He was the first teacher to empower students to explore their own learning, something which has been utilized in the educational system today.
Zahavi also developed an interest in philosophy and religion and was always curious about the answers to life’s biggest questions. He went on to earn a master’s degree in the subjects in 1957 and a doctorate in the same subjects in 1966.
Throughout the next four decades, Zahavi traveled the world giving lectures on philosophy, religion and the purpose of life. He was also a noted author and published several books. Zahavi was highly admired and respected, and he was also very generous. He made several large donations to various educational projects, as well as to charity organizations.
On March 6, 2009, Edward Hastings Zahavi passed away at the age of 90. He left behind a remarkable legacy and an even greater tradition of education and learning. Zahavi was an innovator who was ahead of his time, and his influence and teachings are still felt today. He was a man of many talents and he will always be remembered for his passion and dedication to learning, teaching, and helping others.
