The History of Chocolate
Chocolate has been around for centuries, but the sweet and chewy treat that we know and love today had its beginnings in Mayan culture thousands of years ago. Before this time, chocolate had been used exclusively as a bitter, spicy drink. The Mayans used the natural ingredients of the cacao tree and ground the beans into a paste which they added water to and then flavored with honey, vanilla, chili and other spices. This drink was seen as an elixir and was often used as a medicine and even a currency.
When chocolate reached Spain in the 1500s, it had to undergo a process that allowed it to become the sweet treat that we know and love today. The bitter drink was almost completely abandoned by Europeans and instead, the cacao beans were ground and combined with sugar, vanilla and other flavorings to create a paste that was both flavorful and sweet. This mixture was then formed into a solid block, which was then sold in stores as “Xocolatl” or “chocolate.”
In 1847, the revolutionary invention of the chocolate bar was made possible by mixing melted chocolate with cocoa butter and molding it into the shaped bars that we recognize today. The first mass-produced chocolate bars were manufactured in 1893 by English chocolate industrialist Joseph Samuel Fry. From there, chocolate quickly gained popularity and today, millions of people across the world can’t get enough of this sweet delicacy.
