One of the most versatile and common types of stainless steel is the austenitic class. The five common austenitic stainless steel grades are 304, 304L, 316, 316L and 321.

304 is a general purpose stainless steel. It is non-magnetic, has good ductility, corrosion resistance and ease of fabrication. It is typically used for general purpose applications such as kitchen and food processing equipment, chemical and petrochemical equipment, architectural and marine applications.

304L is the low carbon version of 304 and is used in applications where welding is required and where higher corrosion resistance is needed. It is generally less easily weldable than other grades but it has the same corrosion resistance and ease of fabrication.

316 is a higher corrosion resistance than 304, also known as a Marine grade stainless steel. It is typically used in commercial and industrial applications such as food processing equipment, chemical processing, and tankage due to its superior corrosion resistant properties.

316L is a low carbon version of 316 and is used in applications where welding is required and high corrosion resistance is needed. It is generally easier to weld than other grades, but it has the same superior corrosion resistance and ease of fabrication.

321 is a high strength austenitic stainless steel. It has an excellent scale resistance and toughness and is used mainly in aircraft exhaust systems, flare stacks and general machinery applications.
