GB 6816―86 Water Quality - Vocabulary - Part 1 and Part 2

GB 6816-86 is a Chinese national standard developed to define the water quality of waterways and related bodies of water throughout China. This standard is known as the Water Quality Vocabulary because it provides a uniform and accepted language for describing, measuring and evaluating the quality of water. This standard is applied to all surface and subterranean waters, and also to polluted waters and to wastewater purification.

Part 1 of this standard consists of five standards that are essential for the evaluation and classification of water bodies. These standards were chosen and adapted according to the requirements of the Chinese Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The five standards are:

1. Standard for Evaluating the Pollution Level of a Water Body: This standard defines the evaluation system for measuring, evaluating and classifying the waters of a body based on the criteria of its degree of pollution, according to Chinese standards. It also provides general descriptions of the lake and river categories, and defines the criteria for assigning each type of water body to a certain pollution level.

2. Standard for Evaluating the Quality of a Water Body: This standard classifies and evaluates the water quality of a body, from excellent to poor, according to the criteria of its degree of pollutant concentration. It contains 11 types of parameters which are used to determine the source and level of pollutants of a water body.

3. Standard for Monitoring Water Pollution: This standard is essential for undertaking effective control and prevention of water pollution. This standard lists the survey points around a water body and the types of monitoring instruments that should be deployed at each point.

4. Standard for Evaluating Water Quality of Public Water Supply: This standard classifies and evaluates the acceptability of public water supply according to the various criteria of water quality and water source.

5. Standard for Certifying Water Purification Installations: This standard stipulates the requirements for licensing and certifying of water purification facilities, including details on the equipment required, the maintenance and regularly scheduled inspections.

Part 2 of this standard specifies the type and content of the water quality monitoring documents that must be kept for legal reasons. It sets the minimum requirements for the compilation of water-related data and information. This includes the specific topics or titles of the documents and their period of validity, as well as the types and quantity of the parameters that will be monitored.

In conclusion, GB 6816-86 serves as a useful standard to help ensure the quality of Chinese waterways, provide valuable information for the study of water pollution, and ensure a safe and reliable drinking water supply for the Chinese population.
