Settling Chambers
Settling chambers, also referred to as dust settling rooms, are used to control fugitive, or airborne, dust within an enclosed area. Dust can be hazardous if inhaled and presents a challenge when attempting to limit its environmental impact. The settling chamber process involves using an enclosed structure to collect and settle the airborne particles out of the ventilation system. Settling chambers provide an economical way to limit the effects of nuisance dust and health hazards.
Settling chambers are an important tool to control fugitive dust in industrial settings. These chambers are typically a large enclosure within an industrial process or production area. The chamber is designed to funnel airborne dust particles into the chamber where they are spread out and allowed to settle on a collection plate or tray. The settling of the particles is accelerated by creating a downward pressure on the air within the chamber through the use of fans. As the dust laden air settles, dust particles are forced downwards and eventually collected on the collection plate. This allows the dust particles to be contained and removed from the process environment.
The design of a settling chamber will depend on the type and volume of dust particles that are contained or created. Generally, the chamber will have a flat plate on the bottom with a collection hopper or bin underneath. This allows for the collected dust particles to be safely contained and disposed of. The height and volume of a settling chamber will depend on the size and volume of dust particles that will be contained. Large particles will require more space for settling.
Settling chambers are designed to operate autonomously with very little maintenance or user intervention. Generally, the settling chamber will have a timer or sensor that will activate the fan or fans to create the downward pressure. Once the airborne dust particles are settled on the plate in the chamber, the fan or fans will shut off, allowing the particles to remain on the plate. Upon reaching a certain threshold, the collection hopper or bin will be emptied and the settling process will begin again.
Settling chambers are an invaluable tool for controlling airborne dust in industrial settings. These chambers allow for the effective reduction of dust particles, limiting the risks associated with airborne dusts. Settling chambers are a cost effective and efficient method for controlling fugitive dust particles, helping to ensure a safe and healthy environment.
