China Petroleum and Chemical Corporation Shengli Oilfield Branch (hereinafter referred to as “Shengli Branch”) is a branch of China Petroleum and Chemical Corporation (Sinopec Corporation) located at Shengli Oilfield in East China’s Shandong Province. The Shengli Branch specializes in oil and gas exploration and exploitation in the Shengli Oilfield. It is one of the most operationally successful of the Sinopec Corporation’s subsidiaries and is the highest-producing branch of Sinopec Corp. in terms of energy production.
Shengli Branch’s history can be traced back to 1952 when the exploration team of the former Petroleum Department of the Ministry of Industry discovered the first oil zone in Shengli Oilfield, the Kongquechuan No. 1 Well. After that, Shengli Branch was established in 1966 to take charge of oil and gas exploration and exploitation in the Shengli Oilfield.
The exploration and exploitation activities of Shengli Branch are supported by advanced scientific research and technological innovations. It has adopted advanced technical measures, such as the use of directional wells, horizontal wells, high-pressure wells and 3D seismic exploration. It has also adopted advanced information systems and technical measures such as integrated exploration and exploitation, integrated operations, and integrated reservoir management.
In addition to oil and gas exploration and exploitation, Shengli Branch also engages in gas production, gas storage and transportation, oil and gas processing, and petrochemical product research and development. It has the Energy Technology R&D (ETRD) Center, two product quality inspection centers, six engineering and technical service centers, three engineering design and construction management companies, three oil product blending companies, ten oil product supply and marketing enterprises, and four natural gas enterprises.
Shengli Branch has been committed to creating a safer and more efficient production environment since its foundation. To this end, it has implemented various safety standards and regulations, carried out safety inspections regularly, established a safety education system, and formulated various emergency response plans. The Branch has been training the branches’ personnel on safety management, emergency response, and accident investigation to ensure a safe working environment.
The technological innovations, integrated operations, and environmental protection measures of Shengli Branch have been instrumental in the Shengli Oilfield’s success. Since 1976, the Shengli Oilfield has been producing continuous oil, and currently its production capacity exceeds 50 million tons of crude oil per year. In 2018, Shengli Branch was awarded the United Nations (UN) Industry and Environment Award, thus becoming the first branch of the Sinopec Corporation to be recognized by the UN.
The success of Shengli Branch is credited to the comprehensive management model it adopted, which integrates operations and management, technology, environment and market. By implementing advanced technology, integrated operations and various safety measures, Shengli Branch has been able to maximize the oil and gas exploitation and production in the Shengli Oilfield, thus becoming one of the most profitable branches of the Sinopec Corporation.
