Printing Terms
1. Affix: To attach to something else by adhesive, by sewing, by staples, or other means.
2. Alignment: The process of positioning images and elements in orientation to each other.
3. Arrangement: The arrangement of various elements on the page.
4. Artwork: Any preparatory material used for printing.
5. Auto-Duplexing: A feature that allows a printer to print on both sides of a sheet of paper automatically.
6. Bleed: The portion of a printed image or page that extends beyond the trim or fold region.
7. Blueprinting: The process of producing a black-and-white reproduction of an image or document.
8. Binding: The process of attaching printed material into a book-like form.
9. Bitmapping: A method of creating an image in which a pattern of dots are used to represent an image.
10. CMYK: An abbreviation for the four-color printing process which stands for Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, and Black.
11. Composite Printing: Printing text and graphics as separate elements on different layers and then combining them into a single image.
12. Copy: The artwork placed on paper for the purpose of being printed.
13. Crop: The process of cutting away or trimming a portion of an image or page.
14. Desktop Publishing (DTP): The process of assembling, laying out, and preparing artwork for print using computers and desktop publishing software.
15. Dot Gain: Refers to the changes that can occur while printing when a dot’s shape and size is affected by elements such as the paper stock.
16. Duplexing: The process of printing on both sides of a sheet of paper.
17. Engraving: A printing process that uses a plate with raised images or textures, which are then impressed upon paper with ink.
18. Font: An alphabet or typeface of characters used for printing or displaying information.
19. Gamut: A range of colors within a set of color models that can be accurately reproduced by a given device.
20. Ganging: Combining multiple images onto one larger sheet of paper to minimize production costs.
21. Gloss: Refers to the shiny or glossy look of printed images under direct light.
22. Halftone: A photographic printing technique that uses dots to create the illusion of color or shading.
23. Hexachrome: A type of six color printing process used to produce a range of colors greater than what is available with standard CMYK.
24. Image Area: The area of the sheet of paper where the visual material will be placed.
25. Impression: Refers to each application of ink onto the paper which happens with multicolor printing.
