GBJ 125-89 Water Supply and Wastewater Design Basic Terms and Definitions

GBJ (General Code of Construction) 125-89 is a set of codes and standards that regulate the design and construction of water supply and wastewater systems. This document establishes basic terms and definitions that must be used during designing and construction.

1. Water Supply System: A system for collecting, transporting, storing, and distributing potable water for the provision of public and private water needs. This includes reservoirs, aqueducts, pipelines, and other components.

2. Wastewater System: A system for collecting, transporting, and storing wastewater from households, businesses, and other sources for treatment and eventual disposal. This includes collectors, conveyors, and other components.

3. Groundwater: Water located beneath the surface of the earth and in rock fissures that is available for human use.

4. Surface Water: Water located on the surface of the earth and in rivers, lakes, or other bodies of water that is available for human use.

5. Sewer: An underground pipe, duct, or other structure designed and constructed to enable the transport of wastewater from a point or points of collection or a park or other facility to a treatment, storage, or disposal facility.

6. Catchment Basin: A depression or excavation containing water, usually located near a point of collection.

7. Reservoir: An artificial or natural lake or pond constructed to store, distribute, or divert water for human use.

8. Aqueduct: A conduit, tunnel, canal, or pipeline carrying water from a natural source to a point of human use.

9. Irrigation System: A system for supplying water to land for agricultural purposes. This includes ditches, pumps, canals, and other components.

10. Pump Station: An installation that provides pressure and/or volume control to water distribution systems.

11. Water Distribution System: A system for supplying water from a water source to points of use by means of a network of pipelines, pumps, and other components.

12. Wastewater Treatment Plant: An installation designed and constructed to treat wastewater before releasing it into the environment.

13. Treatment Works: An installation designed and constructed to treat sewage and wastewater by means of physical, chemical, or biological processes.

14. Disposal System: A system for collecting, transporting, and disposing of sewage and wastewater.

15. Sewage Collection System: A system for collecting sewage or wastewater from its point of origin to a treatment facility or a disposal system.

16. Wastewater Disposal System: A system for collecting and removing wastewater from a treatment facility to a point of ultimate disposal.

17. Effluent: The liquid discharged from a wastewater treatment plant.

18. NPDES: The National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System, a system of laws and regulations that control pollutant discharges from municipal treatment facilities.

19. Pollutant: Any substance, including gas, particulates, or microorganisms, that contaminates water or alters its quality.

20. Eutrophication: The aging of a body of water due to the accumulation of nutrients and the resulting increase in biological productivity.

21. Bacteria: Microorganisms that can cause health problems and alter water quality.

22. Fecal Coliform: A bacterial indicator of fecal contamination.

23. Suspended Solids: Solids that suspend in water or wastewater and impair water quality.

24. Dissolved Oxygen: The concentration of oxygen dissolved in water or wastewater.

25. Turbidity: The cloudiness of a water or wastewater sample caused by the presence of suspended solids.
