Molybdenum is a valuable metal mineral with an atomic number of 42 and a symbol of Mo. It is an important alloying element in steel manufacturing, and has the highest melting point of any element. In recent years, its application value in various fields has been further increased.

Molybdenum is mainly extracted from molybdenum-containing ores by roasting and reduction. Molybdenum ore is mainly divided into three categories: molybdenite, wulfenite and ferrimolybdenite. Molybdenite is the most prosperous ore type and is the main source of molybdenum. After flotation, the concentrate contains 0.5% to 1% of MoS2, which is further processed to produce molybdenum concentrate. Molybdenum concentrate usually contains a large amount of impurities, and it is only after calcination and other deep processing processes to become the desired molybdenum concentrate.

Molybdenum has a wide range of industrial uses, such as petroleum, chemical, aerospace, boiler, automobile and other sectors. In terms of petrochemical, molybdenum is widely used in the production of organic and inorganic molybdenum compounds, such as ethylene diamine, methyl, ethylene diamine, acetic acid, potassium molybdate and sodium, molybdate. Among them, molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) and molybdenum oxide (MoO2) are two of the most widely used molybdenum compounds for lubricants, metal alloys, water treatment and other applications. In addition, molybdenum alloy is widely used in the aviation and aerospace fields, as well as in nuclear energy, energy storage and other industries.

In terms of metallurgy, molybdenum alloy is widely used for strength and hardness in forging various steel products, such as aircraft parts, tools, ships, automobiles, etc. For example, molybdenum-based alloys are often used as valve material, as well as its corrosion-resistant properties; molybdenum alloy steel is widely used in the drill pipe, sucker rod, piston rod, shaft sleeve and other aircraft parts, as well as its wear resistance properties.

Molybdenum is also the essential trace elements for the growth of plants and animals, can promote the growth of animal fur and feathers, in addition, it can also improve the utilization of carbohydrates, proteins, fat and other food nutrients, and enhance the resistance of animals and plants to external impacts. The intake of molybdenum can also effectively prevent the occurrence of some diseases in vertebrates.

Molybdenum is an important resource material, so it is important to research the resources, increase the utilization rate, save energy and reduce costs, develop advanced technology and expand the application field of molybdenum. Therefore, research on molybdenum must be conducted in the future to overcome the shortage of resources and further expand its application value.
