Nickel sulfide smelting furnace is mainly used for smelting of copper-nickel sulfide ore in China. The nickel sulfide smelting furnace adopts the principle of flash smelting, which can quickly extract the valuable metal and eliminate impurities. It can be divided into two types: Blast Furnace Smelting and Electric Furnace Smelting.

Blast Furnace Smelting

Blast furnace smelting is the traditional and most common method of smelting nickel sulfide. The furnace is filled with iron ore and other scrap steel, and then heated to melting point and let nickel ore enter the steel slag according to the certain ratio. The copper-nickel sulfide ore is deoxidized and reduced in the furnace, which is then sulfided. Finally, the slag and the furnace are purified and nickel matte is obtained.

Electric furnace smelting

Electric furnace smelting is an advanced smelting process that uses an electric furnace to heat nickel sulfide ore and produces a mixture of matte and slag, which can significantly improve the smelting efficiency compared with the blast furnace smelting method.

The electric furnace smelting of nickel sulfide ore follows the following steps: First, fine particulate ore is charged into the furnace and powered, and the ore is melted into liquid. Secondly, the ore and silicate react together, which causes the impurities of the ore to form a complex combination. Thirdly, the complex combination of impurities is eliminated by adding a flux material, forming slag and matte. Finally, the matte is magnetically separated and the slag is discarded.

The use of electric furnace smelting is advantageous compared with blast furnace smelting:

1.The electric furnace smelting process has quick reaction speed, shortening the smelting time, so the heat loss is relatively small.

2.Electric furnace smelting has better controllability, and it is easier to adjust the smelting parameters in the process.

3.The complete reaction process can be realized under the condition of low furnace temperature and low oxygen activity, and the volatile impurities contained in the nickel sulfide ore can be reduced and the separation effect is more commendable.

4.The whole smelting process does not need to use the gas coke fuel, and the operating cost is low.

Conclusion

In addition to the two smelting methods introduced above, there are other methods such as burning and chlorination smelting, open hearth smelting, etc. Nickel sulfide smelting furnace test with qualified slag nickel-iron ratio, can not only increase the nickel recovery rate, but also reduce the environmental pollution of tailings.
