The proper use and maintenance of roller bearings is essential to increase the life of these important and often the most expensive parts of machinery. If they are operated improperly they can wear down prematurely, resulting in expensive replacements. Here are some hints and tips on how to get the best out of your roller bearings.

1. Choose the right specification – Careful selection of roller bearing specification is essential as it has a direct bearing on the operation of the machine and the costs (not just the purchase price, but also maintenance). A wide array of products exist and different manufacturers have different specifications.

2. Cleanliness – Always ensure the bearings and their housing are clean, particularly on installation. If possible use clean industrial grade lubricant such as petroleum-based oil, or if required a grease. The lubricant will help protect against corrosion and on an installation, help the bearings to rotate smoothly and quietly.

3. Regular inspections – Check the bearings regularly for signs of wear. If any fault is detected, replace them immediately with the correct specification. If there are signs of an underlying problem then further investigation should be done.

4. Bearing protection – Bearings should be stored in such a way that they are protected from dirt, corrosion and damage. If it is not possible to store them in this way then keep in an air-tight, grease-packed container. It is best not to wash the bearings with water or any other liquid.

5. Grease period – Only re-grease the bearings occasionally, after inspecting them. Do not over-grease as excessive grease can cause problems.

6. Shaft lubrication – Bearings should always be lubricated using the correct specification of grease and oil. This will help to both improve their performance and minimise wear.

7. Temperature range – Avoid exposing the bearings to extreme temperatures. Too hot can cause them to expand, whereas too cold can cause their lubricating film to break down and fail.

8. Make sure the loads are within specification – Roller bearings have to work with a specified load. If exceeded then it will reduce the life of your bearings.

9. Careful installation – Bearings should be installed correctly and should be installed in line with the lubrication methods laid down by the manufacturer of the bearing.

Finally, consult with the bearing manufacturer if you are in any doubt. Their technical staff should be able to give you professional advice as to how best to utilise your bearings. With the correct use and maintenance, roller bearings should provide many years of reliable performance and help to keep your machinery working reliably.
