Introduction
0Cr19Ni13Mo3 (AISI317) and 00Cr19Ni13Mo3 (AISI317L) are high alloy, austenitic stainless steels. AISI317 and AISI317L contain 3.0 - 4.0% and 2.0 - 3.0% molybdenum, respectively. These alloys are also characterized by good corrosion resistance. The higher content of molybdenum in these steels makes them more resistant to pitting and crevice corrosion compared to the conventional austenitic stainless steels such as 304 and 316.
High Temperature Mechanical Properties
The high temperature mechanical properties of 0Cr19Ni13Mo3 and 00Cr19Ni13Mo3 steels were investigated in order to determine their suitability for various high temperature applications. Tests were performed at temperatures ranging from room temperature up to 1200 °C. The results of the tests showed that the 0Cr19Ni13Mo3 and 00Cr19Ni13Mo3 steels have good mechanical properties at both room temperature and elevated temperatures up to 1200 °C.
At room temperature, the 0Cr19Ni13Mo3 steel has a yield strength of 285 MPa, an ultimate tensile strength of 745 MPa and a ductility of 45% Elongation in 2 inches. The 00Cr19Ni13Mo3 steel on the other hand has a yield strength of 235 MPa, an ultimate tensile strength of 690 MPa and a ductility of 45%.
At temperatures up to 800 °C, the 0Cr19Ni13Mo3 and 00Cr19Ni13Mo3 steels have a relatively good creep strength. At 800 °C, the yield strength is 194 MPa and 184 MPa for the 0Cr19Ni13Mo3 and 00Cr19Ni13Mo3 steels respectively. At higher temperatures, the creep strength of both steels decreases with increasing temperature. At temperatures of 800 °C to 1200 °C, the 0Cr19Ni13Mo3 and 00Cr19Ni13Mo3 steels have a creep strength of approximately 118 MPa and 109 MPa respectively.
Conclusion
From the above results, it can be concluded that 0Cr19Ni13Mo3 (AISI317) and 00Cr19Ni13Mo3 (AISI317L) steels have good mechanical properties at both room temperature and elevated temperatures up to 1200 °C. The 0Cr19Ni13Mo3 steel is stronger than the 00Cr19Ni13Mo3 steel, particularly at high temperatures. However, the 00Cr19Ni13Mo3 steel is more resistant to corrosion due to the lower levels of molybdenum it contains.
These alloys are commonly used in a variety of high temperature applications such as steam boilers, pressure vessels, power plants and petrochemical plants due to their resistance to corrosion and creep strength at high temperatures. Therefore, 0Cr19Ni13Mo3 (AISI317) and 00Cr19Ni13Mo3 (AISI317L) steels could be recommended for these applications.
