The Song Dynasty Iron Man
During the Song Dynasty in China, a man named Zhao Kuangyin began making what became known as the Iron Man. Zhao was born into a military family in 927, and it was here that he learned the art of war. As a young man, he joined the Liangzhou army, and it was during this service that he gained military experience.
As his career advanced, Zhao began to make detailed plans for the production of an armored suit. His ambition was to improve the use of firepower and create a more effective military force. The armor he invented consisted of a copper or tin core structure, with an embedded network of tiny steel plates. Additionally, the suit was designed to protect the wearer not only from arrows and other projectiles but also from sword and dagger attacks.
In 976, Zhaos dream of creating personal armor became a reality. He gathered artwork from several famous Chinese craftsmen, as well as the expertise of numerous metalsmiths from all around China. The finished product was tightly fitting and made from steel, aluminum, and other metals. The armor-clad Zhao Kuangyin used this suit to lead his troops into battle and achieved great success while doing so.
