Entertainment, Recreation and Leisure:
In the past people had more free time and more opportunity to relax and enjoy themselves. They would spend their leisure time engaging in activities that were unique to their culture, such as fishing, farming, or telling stories. Today, however, leisure activities are very different. The world has become smaller and society has advanced in many ways, allowing us to explore, discover, and enjoy many different types of entertainment and recreation.
Entertainment is an activity that provides enjoyment and amusement. We watch movies, play video games, and listen to music, all activities that are designed to provide us with pleasure and are usually considered forms of entertainment. Going to the theater, amusement parks, and concerts are all popular forms of entertainment, and all of them require a form of expenditure, usually in the form of money.
Recreation is generally an activity that involves other people, takes place outdoors, and often involves physical activity. Hiking, camping, and fishing are all examples of popular recreational activities which can provide us with an outlet to connect with and appreciate the beauty of nature. Sports are also popular forms of recreation, as are social activities such as spending time with friends or family.
Leisure activities often involve relaxation and leisure pursuits that involve no cost, such as reading a book or taking a leisurely walk. Other leisure activities may involve spending money, such as going to the movies or out to dinner. Leisure activities are often used to provide us with a sense of calm and pleasure, or used to take a break from the stresses of daily life.
These days, there is an endless variety of entertainment, recreation and leisure activities for us to choose from. From listening to music to playing sports to visiting amusement parks, people have more opportunities than ever before to engage in activities of their choosing. Entertainment, recreation and leisure activities can be solitary or shared, inexpensive or costly, physical or mental, and virtually anything we can imagine.
