Leadership in Theatre

In the performing arts, leadership is a vital part of being successful and playing the part of a successful artistic director. A competent leader will be capable of motivating their team and ensuring that the end goal is met effectively, efficiently and professionally. Performance directors have the responsibility of guiding their team to success and by doing so they become excellent role models. Directors embody what it means to be a leader in the performing arts.

To be a successful leader in the theatre, it is important for the director to motivate their team to rise above what is expected. This may involve pushing each team member to do more than what is necessary, whether that is in their performance, practice, organization or any other aspect of the production. A great leader in the theatre will make sure that this momentum is maintained to increase productivity, as well as keeping morale high.

It is essential for directors to be able to communicate effectively with the team in order to achieve maximum efficiency. With clear, open and methodical communication, a director has the opportunity to establish themselves as the leader of the team. This can be done through the issuing of directions, tips and techniques that the team should work towards.

In addition to communication, it is important to have structure. Structure allows the team to have a better understanding of what their roles are, what the expectations are and how each member should endeavour to contribute. This also extends to the organizational aspect of the production. A great director should be able to keep track of deadlines, tasks and other elements of production in order to ensure that everything is proceeding as planned.

Finally, a good leader will be conscious of the safety of their team. On set, directors have the responsibility of creating a safe working environment by making sure that rehearsal and performances are run smoothly and safely. In theatre, sequences such as fight and stunt scenes may put performers at risk and it is the director’s responsibility to ensure that all safety measures are taken. By taking safety seriously, a director shows that they are committed to their team’s safety and wellbeing.

Ultimately, a great leader should be able to effectively work with their team to create a successful production. By embodying the art of leadership, a director can become an effective role model to their team and light the way to a successful production.
