Aluminum Alloy Forging Repair Technology

Nowadays, aluminum alloy forging has been widely used in aircraft, automobiles and other fields. In the process of forging and manufacturing, there may be cracks, hammer marks, uneven surfaces, deformations, etc. In order to make the forging products conform to the specified dimensions and shape requirements, repair will be needed.

The repair of aluminum alloy forging mainly includes three technical measures, cold working technology, heat treatment technology and repair welding technology. No matter which repair technology is used, it needs to be combined with residual stress measurements in order to eliminate the residual stress generated by repair welding, preheating or high temperature processing and achieve the desired effect.

The cold repair technology means that the aluminum alloy forging parts are reworked by cold hammering and cold stretching. It has the advantages of simple operation, low investment and good effect. In general, if there are fatigue cracks in the aluminum alloy forged pieces, the cold repair technology can usually repair the cracks.

Heat treatment technology can be divided into annealing, normalizing, tempering and quenching. The annealing, normalizing and tempering are suitable for all kinds of aluminum alloy forgings. Especially for the parts with complex shape and dimensional requirements, heat treatment technology is the best choice. Although the quenching process has the effect of strengthening and improving the mechanical properties, it is not suitable for complex aluminum alloy forging parts.

Repair welding technology is an alternative and effective way for aluminum alloy forging repair. First, clean the weld surfaces and remove foreign substances such as oil and rust, then use electrodes and wires to weld. However, due to the softness of aluminum alloy materials, in order to avoid the occurrence of cold cracks, higher preheating temperature and post-welding quenching are necessary.

In conclusion, cold working, heat treatment and repair welding technology are important approaches for aluminum alloy forging repair. However, in order to achieve the desired repair effect, inspection, analysis and other work should be carried out before the choice of repair technology. Combining with residual stress measurement to eliminate the residual stress generated by repair welding, preheating or high temperature processing will also be very helpful.
