Electric spark strengthening is a process of Microstructural and hardness modification of surface layer to improve fatigue, corrosion and wear resistance of metallic components; and even to modify surface properties. The strengthening is achieved by subjecting the surface to a sequence of high-voltage electrical discharges applied between an electrode and the surface. Usually the process is performed in a suitable electrolyte and the tool electrode is similar to the part. This process can be used in many applications like engines, pumps and valves, components such as shafts, axles, bars and wires, carbide tools and rolls, automobiles, helicopters and others.

Electric spark strengthening process is based on Joule effect and the Theory of Multiple Hot Cracks. The mechanical energy introduced by the electrical discharge into the metallic surface produces a highly localized increase of the temperature that causes their melting and evaporation. The formation of evacuated voids or micropockets is followed by the rapid solidification of those pockets creating small ripple-like indentations known as cold sprays. This creates a series of geometrical patterns over the working area with high hardness and improved resistance.

The essential components required to operate the Electric spark strengthening machine include a high-voltage power generator, a spark gap and a tool electrode. The spark gap creates a spark with high-voltage electrical discharges applied between the electrode and the surface. The gap is monitored and controlled by a computer to ensure desired electrical parameters are achieved throughout the process.

The Electrode is a tool that controls the shape of the working area and is used to control the shape and size of the strengthened area. An electrode can be custom tailored or designed according to the geometry of the work piece to be strengthened.

The Electric spark strengthening machine has the ability to be automated and comes with a variety of features. The machine has an adjustable frequency and an adjustable amplitude, as well as speed and current adjustments. Also, a special direct current generator helps to control the frequency rate, ensuring the constant maintenance of a high-quality process.

The level of strain hardening attained by the Electric spark strengthening process is almost independent of the material thickness, as the process is conducted on the surface only. The low level of thermal stress created by this process also makes it suitable for cases or parts where traditional thermal hardening processes may not be applicable.

In summary, an Electric spark strengthening machine is an efficient and versatile tool used to harden metallic components and make them more durable. This machine is a cost effective means of turning ordinary metals into superior materials. It is used in many industries to strengthen parts, increase resistance and make them more durable.
