Cross Level Communication
Cross-level communication is an organic cycle of exchanging information and feedback between and across hierarchical levels of an organization’s power structure. It is an integral part of organizational development, communication, and production and requires some serious thought, management and consideration. Cross-level communication is essential when creating organizational policies or new plans to improve services and products, as leaders need to understand how those programs impact those implementing them. However, even when communication is stressed within the organization, it can still be difficult to achieve effective, collaborative cross-level interaction.
All stakeholders in an organization should have the chance to be heard and represented. Cross-level communication makes everyone involved part of an open exchange of ideas, strategies, and feedback channels. It provides an opportunity for those at the top of the organizations power structure to get direct and unfiltered ideas from those lower on the structure, giving them a comprehensive view of the collective experience. Likewise, those within the lower ranks of the organization can communicate their own opinions, feedback and issues up the chain to a level where they can be heard and addressed. This happens best when there is a good-faith effort to understand, listen and work cooperatively.
For example, a leader might be looking to implement a new policy in the workplace. It is important that the opinions, ideas and concerns of the people affected are heard and taken into consideration – both in implementation and enforcement. The leader should listen to, seek out and value all perspectives, regardless of title or position, in order to make an informed decision. They should also take into account the potential impact of implementing such a policy and make sure that everyone across the organizational levels is aware of the change and how it will affect them.
At the same time, lower-level employees should be encouraged to speak up and voice their thoughts, so that those at higher levels have the full picture. They should not be afraid to express their opinions, poses thoughtful questions and offer suggestions on new policies and changes. Even in hierarchical organizations, everyone should have their point of view heard and respected.
Cross-level communication provides a platform for all stakeholders in the organization to ensure their input is taken into consideration and influences organizational decision-making. By creating structures and processes to encourage and facilitate cross-level communication, organizations are giving everybody an equal voice, promoting goal alignment and fostering a healthy collaborative environment. With regards to organizational development and decision-making, cross-level communication is an invaluable tool and should be an integral part of any successful organizations operations.
