Continuous Casting of Steel
Continuous casting is the process of producing steel into semi-finished products directly from solidified metal in a continuous mold. It is the most cost-effective production process for a wide range of steel grades, capable of producing long and wide products. In the continuous casting process, molten steel is poured into a shallow rotating mold where it solidifies in the shape of a strand. The strand is cooled by sprayed water, and then the newly solidified strand leaves the bottom of the mold and enters a series of rollers that form it into the desired shape.
The continuous casting process is different from conventional casting methods, such as ingot casting, in that it does not require the additional freezing and forming operations. This prevents the formation of oxidation during the re-heating process, resulting in high quality steel with superior mechanical properties. This superior product can be cut into shape and the integrity of the product is maintained for further processing, such as rolling or welding.
The main advantage of continuous casting is its high productivity and cost efficiency compared to conventional methods, since it avoids the need for multiple passes through the finishing line and reduces labor requirements. Furthermore, continuous casting excels in product consistency, ensuring that products are uniform in mecahnical properties, as well as size and shape.
Continuous casting has a wide range of applications including rebar, hollow sections and various special steel products such as strand, sections and billets, among others. It can also be used to produce various alloy grades, including carbon steel and stainless steel, low-alloy steels and structural steel.
The continuous casting process can take place vertically or horizontally, depending on the requirements of the application. Horizontal continuous casting is the most common and versatile method, as it can produce a wide range of steel sections from small rounds and bars to large slabs and billets.
Continuous casting is an invaluable process for the steel industry, as it can easily create large and small sections of steel for a variety of applications. It is a cost effective and efficient method for production of steel at high quality levels, making it an essential part of the industry.
