Currency Funds
Currency funds are a type of mutual fund that invests into foreign currencies. These funds are available in both mutual fund and exchange-traded fund (ETF) formats and often employ different investment strategies. They are typically created to provide investors with exposure to the foreign currency markets without having to buy the actual underlying currency.
Typically, a currency fund will attempt to match the movements in a particular currency or group of currencies by investing in foreign currency deposits, derivatives, and other currency-based investments. Currency funds may also invest in government or corporate bonds denominated in the currency or commodities that are priced in the currency of the fund.
The primary risk associated with currency funds is that their performance depends heavily on the relative value of foreign currency pairs, which can be highly volatile. Likewise, an investor may also not realize as much profit as they expected when a currency increases in value drastically.
