History

UniCredit SpA was founded in 1931 as a joint venture between the CreditoArtigiano Italiano and Credito Commercial Italiano (CCI). The two banks were merged in 1936 to form the current bank. Over the years, UniCredit Group has grown through various acquisitions to become one of the leading financial companies in Italy. In the 1990s the bank began to expand beyond Italy, establishing several direct banks in other European countries. In 2003, the bank merged with German HypoVereinsbank (HVB) and acquired majority control of the Bank Austria group in 2005.
