X14CrMoS17 Introduction

X14CrMoS17 is a high chromium martensitic stainless steel containing up to 17% chromium and sulfur to increase hardness and improve machinability. This grade is characterized by very good corrosion resistance and good formability. The grade is used for applications such as shafts and valves in the oil and gas, automotive and chemical industries.

The grade is composed of the following elements: the element X14CrMoS17 is composed of 14.00 % of chromium (Cr), 10.00 % of carbon (C) and 3.00 % of molybdenum (Mo). In addition, there is also a trace amount of sulfur (S) as a secondary alloying element. Thus, X14CrMoS17 combines high chromium content along with molybdenum and sulfur for improved thermal and mechanical properties.

X14CrMoS17 Corrosion Resistance

X14CrMoS17 is a highly corrosion resistant grade, providing excellent resistance in a wide variety of corrosive conditions. This grade shows good resistance to both strong reducing and oxidizing acids and alkalis, in particular, those containing chlorides. Furthermore, it shows good resistance to salt and water spray, making it suitable for marine applications.

X14CrMoS17 Mechanical Properties

The X14CrMoS17 grade has excellent mechanical properties. It has a high tensile strength of 865–980 MPa and good resistance to impact and fatigue. As a result, X14CrMoS17 is suitable for applications in which components are subjected to extreme mechanical loading and wear. The hardness of this grade can be increased by heat treatment, making it suitable for applications which require wear resistance.

X14CrMoS17 Machinability

X14CrMoS17 can be machined to high quality and close tolerances. The addition of sulfur to the alloy improves machinability and surface finish, reducing the tools wear rate. This grade can be difficult to machine when in its as-supplied condition and a higher cutting speed is recommended to minimize tool wear.

Applications of X14CrMoS17

Due to its excellent mechanical and corrosion resistance, the X14CrMoS17 grade is suitable for a wide range of applications. This grade is commonly used in oil and gas, automotive and chemical industries. It is ideal for applications such as shafts and valves which require excellent mechanical properties and uniform corrosion resistance. X14CrMoS17 is also used in the medical, food, and aerospace industries.

Conclusion

In conclusion, X14CrMoS17 is a high chromium martenitic stainless steel which combines excellent corrosion resistance and good formability, along with high strength and hardness. The grade is ideally suited for applications in oil and gas, automotive and chemical industries, as well as for medical, food and aerospace applications. This grade provides excellent machinability and long tool life, making it a cost-effective choice for many applications.
