Globalization: The Pros And Cons
Globalization is defined as a process by which different societies, cultures, and regional economies integrate through a global network of communication, transportation, and trade. In a more direct sense, it refers to the moves toward an increasingly integrated global economy marked by such exchanges of goods and services, capital, knowledge, and even people as migration across national boundaries. Although global activity has become pervasive in the modern world, it is a relatively recent development and has in fact been accelerating since the 1800s.
Proponents of globalization argue that it is a positive force that helps to create economic opportunities and jobs, reduces poverty, encourages social mobility, and allows for a sharing of knowledge, innovation and technology across the world. They claim that it has increased competition in global markets, leading to increased efficiency and productivity, as well as better quality products and services at lower prices. Globalization has also been linked to political freedom, as countries that become more integrated into the global market become more open to human rights and democracy.
On the other hand, globalization has been blamed by many for a host of ills, including growing inequality, the exploitation of workers, environmental degradation and the spread of disease. There is also growing concern over the potential for large corporations to dominate global markets, leading to an increasing loss of cultural identities and homogenization. All of these negative effects are particularly acute in developing and third-world countries, which are often more vulnerable to the changes brought about through globalization.
The reality is that globalization is a complex phenomenon with both positive and negative consequences.
