Abrasion—Wear caused by rubbing, scraping, or erosion.
Anneal—Heat-treating process used to soften metal.
Bending—Forming sheet metal into desired shape on press brake.
Binder—The material used to fill the space between two members being joined.
Blanking—Eliminating a part from a piece of stock.
Buckle—An inward bend occurring in a punch blanked part caused by improper support or incorrect hold-down pressure.
Burn—A discoloration on the levered portion of components from overstressing the punch and die.
Cold Head—Forming machine used to make different cold-rolled parts.
Counterpunch—Removable insert that helps shape punch blanked parts.
Cup—Forming a hemispherical shape on the end of a part.
Deep Draw—Forming a cup with a shallow or deep depth to the radius.
Die—Usually the lower part of a press tool that holds the print and bucks.
Differentiating—Forming one or more ribs at a uniform depth on a press blanked or sheared part.
Drawing—Pulling or stretching the stock to form a deep cup.
Elastoflex—Thick, rubber-like material used to cushion and/or absorb shock in presses, forming machines and production dies.
Embossing—Forming an impression on the material from an engraved die.
Forming—Shaping a part by a punch traveling through a die.
Forging—Work hardening a piece of metal from the application of hot or cold force.
Hardening—A process utilized to make a part more resistant to denting and wear, prevents galling and increases wear life.
Hemming—Folding the edge of a part over.
Lancing—Cutting or trimming a part along a predetermined line.
Nibbling—Removing material in a flaking action.
Notching—Forming a notch or U-shaped cut either on the surface of or through a part.
Pierce—A punch blanked or sheared cutout.
Piercing—Punching a partial or complete hole in a blank.
Progressive die—A multipart folding die with precision- determined registration which produces parts in a continuous sequence.
Punch—The top part of a press tool which performs the cutting and blanking.
Rivet—A length of metal which is compressed to hold two or more parts together.
Rolling—Forming a cup by passing a heated piece of metal between rollers.
Shear—Cutting off stock by means of two cutting blades relative to one another.
Staking—A heat-treating process in which a part is compressed by a stake to hold it in place.
Stretchforming—Forming of a part by stretching over a form by compressing a blank into a form and then stretching.
Trimming—Completing the contour of a part.
Variety Perforation—A method of forming a perforation into a part in an irregular manner.
Vent Hole Punching—Punching a hole or holes in a part to permit cooling.
