Changsha Institute of Mining and Metallurgy was founded in 1962. It became the biggest metallurgical research institute in the middle and southern region of China soon.
Divided into ten research branches, the institute is mainly engaged in researching the problems concerning the exploitation, dressing, smelting, shaping, utilization, environmental and safety of energy and non-ferrous metals such as iron and steel, copper and aluminum, nickel and cobalt, rare earth, magnesium, titanium and tungsten.
The institute can undertake the formulation and revision of standards and technological regulations, industrial engineering design and technical consultation, new products development and technology appraisal which are mainly concerned with exploiting, dressing, smelting, shaping, utilization and environmental protection of the whole course of metallurgical production.
The institute boasts the post-doctoral research station, engineer training centers for iron and steel, rare earth and comprehensive treatment, technical centers for production and materials, research centers for coal chemical industry, and many other research platforms. Also the institute has several laboratories for metallurgy, coal chemical industry, materials, etc. The total area of its laboratory covers 20,000 square meters and it is provided with advanced test equipments, such as material physical-mechanic testing systems, scanning electron probes and so on.
As an important research organization in the country, the institute has undertaken many projects of national and military importance. The institute has made great contributions in combining academy and production so as to provoke national economic construction. Moreover, more than 10,000 employees have already been sent out to the various parts of the world to work in the metallurgical engineering areas.
Besides technologic innovation, the institute is also very active in international exchange and cooperation. A large number of scholars and engineers have been to Japan, the United States and many other countries for learning and scientific researching. At the same time, foreign scholars are warm-heartedly welcomed here.
To be a national engineering technology center, the institute will make full use of the advantageous talents and abundant resources. It will strive to become the researching center for extracting and exploiting of non-ferrous metals in China and of the world.
