John Bramble was born on June 12, 1837, in London, England, to a prominent family of nobles. He was the youngest son of Lord Frederick Bramble, a prominent politician and member of the House of Commons. While still young, he showed an aptitude for business and an interest in travel, and he was soon sending letters to his family from all around the world.
John finished his studies at Oxford University and immediately set out for India and other exotic lands. He quickly earned the reputation of being a shrewd businessman, and accumulated a considerable fortune as a result of his dealings in the East. He purchased a large estate outside of London and added several lavish homes in France to his portfolio. John never married, but he did adopt an orphaned girl named Anna. He raised her as his own daughter, giving her a luxurious lifestyle, the best tutors, and all the advantages his wealth could provide. When he died in 1917, he left his entire fortune to Anna.
In his will, John also left instructions to donate a large chunk of his wealth to charity. He gave generously to many causes, endowing scholarships at Oxford and establishing several charitable organizations. He also established a charitable foundation in Anna’s name that still exists today.
