Rolling pressure
Rolling pressure is essential in many mechanics processes, such as welding, forming and other joining processes. It is a term used to refer to the amount of force applied on a material such as metal or a plastic when it is being compacted, reshaped or bent. Rolling pressure is generally an important factor in the production of a variety of products.
When a material is applied an external force, it practices the contact between the material and the opposite surface which is being rolled. This contact leads to the increase in temperature of the material together with the increase of the applied pressure, leading to the material being thawed and pliable as it is being bent and rolled. The increase of contact pressure encourages the surface to open up, providing a more efficient working environment.
Four major parameters are taken into account when determining the rolling pressure, these are: the surface material and properties, the amount of contact force applied, the amount of energy dissipated during the rolling and the amount of frictional energy. Depending the parameters, different materials require different levels of rolling pressure for it to be properly forged, bent or welded. The surface material and its properties play an important role in the determination of the rolling pressure required as each material has different melting points and other properties.
For example, a softer material such as plastic or aluminum would require less pressure to form or have it welded as compared to a harder material such as steel or stainless steel. To further illustrate, aluminum requires a rolling pressure that is 10-30 percent lower than that of mild steel and stainless steel a pressure that is 20-40 percent higher than that of mild steel in order to be properly handled. Rolling pressure also needs to be adjusted when welding different types of materials together.
Overall, the use of rolling pressure is inevitable in many mechanical processes as it is necessary in order to properly shape or weld various materials. Adjustments to the amount of pressure used is necessary to ensure that different types of materials are handled properly. It is important for users to be aware of the different parameters that come into play when determining the rolling pressure and to ensure that the correct amount is used.
