How to Stay Sane in a Pandemic
2020 has been a year like no other. The novel coronavirus has caused a global health pandemic, wreaking havoc on our lives. As the days go on, it can be harder and harder to feel like you’re staying sane. Staying resilient and staying healthy mentally is equally as important as staying physically healthy. Here are some tips to follow that may help:
1.Stay connected. Social distancing does not have to mean emotional distancing. Now more than ever, it’s important to reach out to your family, friends, and support systems to stay connected and safe. Schedule a regular phone call with a loved one, or host online gatherings with a group for a movie night, happy hour, or virtual game night.
2. Take breaks. Working from home and feeling like you can’t take a break is all too familiar in 2020. It’s important to give yourself permission to take a break. Step away from the computer and take a walk, go for a bike ride, meditate, or read a book.
3. Accept uncertainty. The unknowns surrounding this pandemic can cause so much stress and ultimately make it hard to stay sane. Try to remember that it’s ok to not have all the answers right now. Allow yourself to accept the fact that we are facing unprecedented times and that it’s impossible to have all the answers.
4. Find joy in the small things. Joy doesn’t have to come from grand plans and events. Look for everyday moments that make you smile. Appreciate the small things you have in your life — from listening to music, crawling into your bed with fresh sheets, and talking with a friend.
5. Make time for yourself. In times of crisis, it can be easy to sacrifice self-care for caring for others. But it’s important to make sure you are taking care of yourself, too. Go for a walk, watch a funny movie, do yoga, dance, or play outdoors. Whatever makes you happy, make sure you’re doing it.
Staying fully healthy during this pandemic is more than just physical health. It’s important to stay mentally and emotionally healthy, too. Making sure to reach out, practice self-care, take breaks, and accept uncertainty are all key in staying sane during these difficult times.
