Requirements of Residual Amount for Iron Slab

Iron slab is an important material for manufacturing steel products. The requirements for residue amount of iron slab are extremely strict to ensure machining accuracy and quality of products.

Generally, the residual amount of steel slab should not exceed 0.15%, which means the quality of the steel should be extremely high with only a small amount of scrap. The size of the residual amount is calculated by weighing the total weight of the steel slab and its scrap portion respectively. The smaller the ratio of scrap weight to the steel slab weight is, the higher the quality of the steel slab is.

The slag content of the steel slab is mainly formed during the casting process. The residual amount is mainly caused by turbulence of the molten steel, a large amount of slag being present in the molten steel or some scale sticking to the inner wall of the mold. Poor control of the casting process will result in a high slag content and the requirements of residual amount of steel slab won’t be met.

In order to improve the quality of steel slab, it is necessary to improve the casting process control. This can be done by choosing a proper casting speed and setting a reasonable pouring temperature. On one hand, a high casting speed can add turbulence to the steel liquid, which can help scavenge slag. On the other hand, an excessively high pouring temperature will cause the steel to oxidize, which will also produce slag.

In addition to the proper control of the casting process, proper selection of raw materials and maintenance of the mold is also important. Low-quality raw materials contain more impurities and slag, which will increase the slag content of the steel liquid and form more slag when poured. The inner wall of the mold will also form scale if not maintained properly, which can stick to the steel slab and lead to higher residual amount.

To sum up, the quality of iron slab is determined by the casting process, raw materials and maintenance of the mold. Only when these three factors are all well controlled, can the residual amount of iron slab meet the requirements.
