Japan Iron and Steel Scrap Classification Standard (JIS G2401)

Japan Iron and Steel Scrap Classification Standard (JIS G2401) was established to classify the scrap steel product used in iron and steel production. According to the standard, the scrap steel products should be divided into three main categories. All scrap steel products are classified as either “Use Scrap Steel,” “Non-Use Scrap Steel,” or “Youroko Scrap SteelS.”

First, “Use Scrap Steel” includes steel that has been regenerated into useful products. It includes used steel products such as automobiles, appliances, motorcycle frames and body parts, railroad track and related materials, construction materials, factory facilities, steel frames, and steel piping. This category includes products used in iron and steel production that can be reused or recycled.

The second type is “Non-Use Scrap Steel.” This includes steel products that have been damaged in use, including rusting, waning, or other deterioration. It includes steel products such as automobile rust, furniture rust, and other materials that have been damaged during the steel production process. It also includes materials that have been utilized for a purpose other than for iron and steel production, such as in the construction of buildings, bridges, and other related structures.

Finally, “Youroko Scrap Steel” includes steel products that are already in a usable form. It includes cold rolled steel, hot rolled steel, galvanized steel, stainless steel, etc., which have been cut, fabricated, or welded for the purpose of reusing it in a different application. It also includes products that have been scraped or damaged due to rust and corrosion, or materials that are already in their original shape but have not been utilized yet.

The Japanese Iron and Steel Scrap Classification Standard (JIS G2401) provides guidance in classifying and appropriately disposing of scrap steel. This standard is beneficial to steel producers, scrap steel purchasers, and other stakeholders involved in the iron and steel production processes. It is important to properly classify and process scrap steel in order to create a sustainable production cycle and to prevent further damage to the environment and society.
