A Human Library

Imagine walking into a library and finding that instead of books lining the shelves, there are people. Different people who are the resources; they each possess their own unique stories, knowledge, and life experiences. You can converse with them and get a deeper understanding of their perspectives and backgrounds. This isnt a dream, its a reality if you attend a human library.

Human libraries are a creative way to challenge prejudice and discrimination by hosting public events that allow people to speak candidly with one another. A human library is subject-centric and typically utilizes a series of real-life people and their expertise to provide education and experiences. The goal of the library is to help build understanding, bridge gaps, and create a safe environment for dialogue and learning.

The human library is divided into sections or categories that represent a specific person or group. Depending on the event, subjects may include refugees, the LGBTQ+ community, political affiliations, marginalized cultures, persons with disabilities, and more. A facilitator will lead each session, involving both the individual who is at the center of the conversation and the audience members. This leader may ask questions to the individual, often about their experience, story, and knowledge.

The human library allows for greater levels of understanding and empathy, which can be invaluable in certain situations. Its not a one-sided conversation; it also allows participants to ask their own questions and develop their own insights regarding the conversation topics. It allows for a more efficient method of exchanging information, rather than a one-on-one experience.

The human library is not a debate or a rally; it’s a safe platform for dialogue, understanding, and learning. It’s intended to promote open dialogue and spark meaningful conversations. By providing this platform and allowing people to converse with one another, individuals will gain insight not just into others’ stories and perspectives, but also into themselves and their own unique experiences. This can help us to connect with each other regardless of any boundaries and gaps.

Attending a human library or hosting one of your own can be a powerful experience. It can increase your understanding of the perspectives of others, help you develop empathy, and open the door to dialogue and collaboration. Human libraries provide a platform for individuals to come together to exchange knowledge and ideas; they look beyond our differences and emphasize our similarities. It gives us the opportunity to learn from each other, empower eachother, and build bridges between communities.

According to a 2018 survey conducted by the good people at Mental Floss, the average American spends roughly one-third of his or her life sleeping. While forty winks is a crucial part of a healthy lifestyle and helps the body rest and recharge, it is still unclear why humans, unlike their animal counterparts, don’t just go to bed when we’re tired, but rather follow a specified circadian rhythm.

Whatever the reason, Americans have begun to veer away from traditional sleep cycles, taking advantage of the fact that the boundaries between work and leisure time have become increasingly blurred. Today, it’s not uncommon to see people staying up late or taking naps during the day. For some, this means packing more activities into a given day, while for others, it could easily lead to a dangerous cycle of fatigue and poor sleep hygiene.

The good news is that there are plenty of ways to form healthy sleep habits in order to restore balance and make sure you get the rest you need. Start by setting an alarm – the same one each day – to remind yourself to go to bed at the same time and wake up at the same time. Develop a routine that helps you prepare for going to sleep, such as taking a hot bath or meditating for a few minutes. Aim to avoid screens, stimulants such as caffeine, and big meals close to bedtime so your body can naturally wind down.

Continue to be mindful of your sleep habits and take note of how you’re feeling the next morning after getting a full night’s rest. The more you practice, the easier it will be to stay consistent with your sleep routine and remain healthy and alert throughout the day – and possibly benefit from the increased productivity that comes with it.
