GB 5117-85 Carbon Steel Welding Electrodes

Introduction

GB 5117-85 carbon steel welding electrodes are a set of welding electrodes used for welding carbon steel as well as for some low alloy steels and cast iron. This standard was created in 1985 and incorporates the same specifications from the then-current existing standards GB 706-70 and GB 7706-72. Due to their ability to be utilized for a wide array of different applications, these welding electrodes are the most frequently used type of consumable welding electrodes world wide and become an important part of the current welding industry.

Material

Carbon steel welding electrodes are made from annealed mild steel wire and a 60/40 copper-zinc alloy. Annealed mild steel has excellent formability and weldability. The copper-zinc alloy provides good mechanical properties, such as resistance to cracking and fatigue, as well as providing good electrical conductivity and corrosion resistance. The wire is then formed into rods, each to a length of 1-1/2 to 2 inches, and packaged.

Applications

GB 5117-85 carbon steel welding electrodes are suitable for a wide range of applications and welding processes, such as steel fabrication, low- and medium-strength steels, pressure vessels, and bridge building. It is often used for welding steel structures and for repairing of cast iron and general fabrication.

Specifications

The GB 5117-85 carbon steel welding electrodes must meet certain specifications in order to be approved by the standards. This includes a minimum electrode length of 1-1/2 to 2 inches and a minimum tensile strength of 500 to 550 mpa. The standard also requires the electrode to be magnetically tested to ensure that it passes the requirements.

Conclusion

GB 5117-85 carbon steel welding electrodes are a set of welding electrodes used for welding carbon steel and some low alloy steels and cast iron. They are the most commonly used type of weld and provide good mechanical properties, such as resistance to cracking and fatigue, as well as increased electrical conductivity and corrosion resistance. This standard provides the necessary specifications for approving these electrodes.
