Wuhan Iron and Steel Corporation
Wuhan Iron and Steel Corporation, commonly known as WISCO is a Chinese state-owned steel and iron company based in the city of Wuhan in the Hubei Province of China. Founded in 1953, the company was one of the four major steel companies in China. Today, it is the countrys third-largest steel manufacturer, with an annual output of more than 20 million metric tons of steel, making it a major player in the global steel industry.
The company is a vertically integrated organization, with operations that span the entire steel-making process. WISCO operates its own mining facilities, producing iron ore and other raw materials from mines located in the Hubei and Shanxi Provinces. From these, it produces its own pig iron, steel, and other related products. Its refining and processing capabilities include blast furnaces and open-hearth furnaces, modern continuous-casting and rolling processes, and extensive downstream processing activities, including galvanizing and finishing treatments.
WISCO is strongly committed to research and development, investing an average of 6-7 percent of its annual sales in R&D activities. The company has three major research and development institutes: The WISCO Steel Research Institute, the WISCO Metallurgical Automation Research Institute, and the WISCO Steel Processing Technology Research Institute. These institutes and their related enterprises bring the company up to date in the steel industry, allowing them to produce and offer their customers the latest in steel technology.
The company also actively invests in environmental protection and energy saving, taking steps to reduce their environmental impact. These include the adoption of new, advanced technologies to reduce pollutants, recycle materials, and improve the efficiency of their operations. WISCO has also implemented an energy efficiency program to save on electricity and natural resource consumption.
In addition to its many activities in the steel manufacturing and technological sector, WISCO is also highly active in the service sector. In 2008, the company established WISCO Logistics, an express delivery and courier business. The company also operates a regional railway service and manages two passenger car and two cargo airports.
Apart from its vast business activities, WISCO is also heavily involved in supporting the local community. It has sponsored numerous educational and cultural activities and events, as well as philanthropic initiatives, to support the economic and social development of Wuhan and surrounding areas.
WISCO has seen strong growth in recent years, and is well positioned to become a leading global player in the steel and iron industry. With its comprehensive service offerings and ongoing research and development activities, WISCO is well-prepared to continue its success in the future.
