Henry Fayols Five Functions of Management
Henry Fayol was a French mining engineer, industrialist, and management thinker. He developed a general theory of business administration that was influential in the development of modern management. This theory focused on five (5) important functions of managers in creating an efficient organizational structure. These five functions of management, also known as “Fayolism,” are planning, organizing, command, coordination and control.
Planning:
The first function of management is planning. This involves creating and developing a long-term strategy for the organization. It also involves setting short-term objectives and formulating policies to achieve those objectives. This function also involves making decisions about how to best use the organization’s resources.
Organizing:
The second function of management is organizing. This entails creating a framework within the organization, including division of labor, delegation of authority and coordination of activities. This function also involves allocating resources to accomplish organizational objectives.
Command:
The third function of management is command. This involves making sure that employees understand their tasks and provide the necessary guidance in order to complete them. This function also includes setting standards of performance, giving guidance and direction, and providing feedback.
Coordination:
The fourth function of management is coordination. This entails ensuring that all parts of the organization are working together in harmony and that all resources are being used in the most effective manner. This may include resolving conflicts within the organization and unifying goals and visions.
Control:
The fifth and final function of management is control. This involves monitoring and evaluating the organization’s performance in order to ensure conformance with established goals and objectives. It also involves taking corrective action when necessary.
