GB5842-1996 Portable Steel Cylinders for Liquefied Petroleum Gases

GB5842-1996 specifies requirements, test methods and inspection rules for portable steel cylinders for liquefied petroleum gases. This standard is applicable to refillable gas cylinders made of normal carbon steel or specialized steel, with a maximum water capacity of 500 liters for liquefied petroleum gases (such as propane, butane and their mixture). Other chemicals in other physical forms are not applicable to this standard.

GB 5842-1996 is divided into 20 parts: product range, technical requirements, sampling, general assembly, structure and design, castings, external and internal surface defects, material defects, low temperature impact, hardness tests, proof tests, valve threads and fittings, fire safety, gas tightness testing, cylinder valves, auxiliary device, labeling, instruction and clearance, packaging, transportation and storage.

The product range stipulates the types, specifications, marks and other basic requirements of the cylinders. The technical requirements cover the requirements for the cylinder body and accessories. Sampling provides a sampling plan applicable to material, finished product and components. The general assembly stipulates the assembly conditions of the cylinder and its accessories. The structure and design includes the choice of materials, allowable stress, hydrostatic pressure resistance and required tests. Casting includes requirements for molding and casting clearance of the cylinder. The external and internal surface defects include requirements for dimensions, chamfering, surface roughness, weld cracks and strength. The material requirements involve chemical composition and mechanical properties. The low temperature impact test requires the impact performance of the cylinders body and accessories to be inspected at low temperature. The hardness test requires that the hardness of the cylinder body must meet the requirements of this standard.

Proof test requires to be carried out on the gas cylinder with proof pressure to detect possible early defects in it. This standard also stipulates the requirements for the thread of the cylinder valve and its accessories, fire safety, gas tightness test and cylinder valve manufacturing. The auxiliary device includes the requirements for valve protection cap and filling adapter. The labeling and instructions covers the contents of the cylinder label, the instruction manual and the safety signs. Packaging, transportation and storage are important links in quality assurance, and they are also included in this standard.
