Silicon iron, also known as ferrosilicon, is a ferroalloy composed of iron and silicon containing 15-90% silicon. Silicomanganese adds a certain amount of carbon in addition to silicon and manganese. Silicon iron is one of the most widely used ferroalloy in China.

Silicon iron is mainly used in steelmaking, casting and other production processes. Steel can increase the hardness, strength and hardenability of steel. Silicon iron is used in steelmaking to remove oxygen, reduce phosphorus and sulfur content, increase carbon content. In addition, silicon iron also increases the corrosion resistance of steel and improves its toughness. In the casting process, silicon iron can increase the hardness, wear resistance and corrosion resistance of cast iron.

Since the late 1980s, the quality of silicon iron produced in China has made a qualitative leap. In order to regulate the production of silicon iron, the Ministry of Metallurgical Industry issued the Ferrosilicon Quality Standard GB/T2272-1987 in July 1987. According to the requirements of this standard, the mechanical properties and chemical composition of silicon iron are specified.

The chemical composition requirements of GB/T2272-1987 are as follows: silicon iron should contain 15% to 90% silicon, the rest should be iron. The chemical composition indicators that need to be controlled include: carbon 0.30% max, sulfur 0.05% max, phosphorus 0.05% max, and manganese 0.50% max.

The mechanical properties requirements of GB/T2272-1987 are: a threshing sample of silicon iron can not be damaged after being heated to 1100 ° C for 2 hours, and the volume of oxidation of the sample shall not exceed 0.01%.

GB/T2272-1987 requires that silicomanganese is a special ferrosilicon that adds carbon to the silicon iron. The proportion of carbon shall not exceed 1.00%. Other relevant chemical elements shall comply with the requirements of silicon iron.

In addition to chemical composition and mechanical properties, GB/T2272-1987 requires silicomanganese to conduct visual inspection, sampling and sampling inspection. Visual inspection should include appearance quality and sundries. Sampling shall be carried out according to the provisions of JB/T8572, and the size and abrasivity of the sample shall be inspected.

In summary, GB/T2272-1987 Ferrosilicon Quality Standard clearly stipulates the requirements for chemical composition, mechanical properties and sampling of silicon iron, and provides reliability for the quality assurance of the product. Therefore, implementation of the standard is essential for reasonable production and use of silicon iron.
